Top Tips to Prevent Burglary

About 733,000 domestic burglaries took place in 2005/6 the most re-cent year for which records have been published. That's one every 43 seconds! So, there is a very real chance of being burgled. Yet, there's a lot you can do to reduce the chances of being a victim - and some of it costs very little or nothing at all. The cost of a burglary can run into thousands of pound much of which may not be covered by your insur-ance, and there's also the emotional distress!.

Here's what you can do...

  • A burglar can be in and out in a couple of minutes so whenever you leave your home, even for a few minutes, securely lock all doors and windows and do not leave keys in locks. If you have animals secure cat flaps etc
  • Many burglars can pick standard locks in under 30 seconds so fit good quality door (BS 3621) and window locks. Remember upstairs windows if you have single storey access points.
  • Thieves may use "fishing rods" to hook car keys or house keys through the letterbox. Do not leave keys within sight or reach of a window or letter box.
  • Do not leave ladders or other climbing aids e.g. wheelie bins within easy reach. Even a small upstairs window can be en-tered by a slim thief.
  • Store all tools including garden tools out of sight. Burglars like to break into sheds (often too easy) to get tools to break into houses.
  • Consider other physical measures such as moresecure side gates, grills on windows and lighting.
