Positioning Cameras

Positioning Cameras

The physical positioning of cameras is a key aspect of good CCTV system design. All to often I see cameras positioned above doors looking straight down? All these are good for is to check for hair loss. Often these are positioned for ease of installation, rather than to achieve a specific objective.

If you are looking to use a CCTV system to view and record facial features at a point of entry, then the camera needs to be positioned at head height, and ideally directly in line with the entry door, to provide full head-on coverage. This can pose several problems, not least there is rarely a convenient place to site the camera, without it looking unsightly or being a target of vandalism in its own right. So sometimes there is a need for compromise. For instance my own camera (see below) is mounted to the side of the entry door, but I capture a full profile of anyone approaching my door, and there are further cameras covering the path leading to this point.

The camera is vandal resistant to overcome it being vandalised and it has Infra Red capability so that it continues to capture images, even in total darkness. Also because it is externally mounted it, and all of its connections, need to be IP rated to protect against the elements.

The key to delivering professional high quality CCTV surveillance is too fully understand the need of the client and then designing a solution that most accurately reflects the design requirement.
